Founders
The Kuyapa non-profit foundation was founded by father-daughter team Aldo and Chiara Macchiavello. Meaning “caring” in the Peru native language Quechua, Kuyapa’s goal is to better the lives of local communities deep within the Peru Andes Mountains and Amazon Rainforest.
Aldo has worked for many years in the finance industry and today with the help of his wife Lissy Urteaga, he heads the first and most premier luxury cruise line in the upper Peruvian Amazon, Delfin Amazon Cruises. Very well-traveled and armed with attentive business sense, his attention is always turned inward to his homeland to find ways to better the lives of his countrymen. Chiara, on the other hand, is a renowned fashion designer based in the capital city of Lima. Her pieces often incorporate aesthetics from the most time-honored cultures of Peru. Though inspired by the beauty of tradition, Chiara’s eye is adamantly dedicated to the looks of the modern and future fashionista. Together, Aldo and Chiara have crafted a clear vision for Kuyapa after seeing firsthand the need for support and growth in these native regions of Peru. Our projects hope to utilize and reinforce the inherent strengths of Peru’s Andean and Amazonian people in order to better the futures of their children and communities. |

Delfin Amazon Cruises
http://www.delfinamazoncruises.com As the first and premier cruise operator in the upper Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, Delfin Amazon Cruises is a regional pioneer in both tourism and social development hand in hand. As guests from all over the world sail through the pristine Pacaya Samiria National Reserve aboard the company’s 2 vessels, Delfin I and the larger Delfin II, they form connections with the jungle people. Delfin Amazon Cruises encourages in-person donations of items that assist with educational and lifestyle endeavors such as pencils, notebooks, t-shirts, and more. In addition, the company actively encourages personal enterprises started by the communities such as featuring colorful handicrafts and traditionally made furnishings on board as part of the total Delfin experience. In total, Delfin Amazon Cruises has been operating in Iquitos and the Amazon for over 8 years and continues to value its role in supporting its neighbors. |
Escudo
http://www.escudo.pe Socially conscious fashion design has been a dream for many years for the founders of Escudo, one of which is Chiara Macchiavello. And today, their dream has become a reality as they work alongside native Andean artisans and textile experts to merge modern trends with stunning time-honored designs that exude the vibrant heart and soul of Peru and its people. In particular, Escudo partners with craftsmen of the Huancavelica province, a place far off the beaten path in the middle of the Andes Mountain range. The heritage pieces that the company collaborates on and later takes to Lima for finishing are sources of pride for the villagers, who in turn are able to reap various benefits from their dedicated work. With established ties to the Andes, Escudo is now interested in furthering their outreach into the Amazon communities as well. |
NeedPeru’s native Amazonian and the Andean populations have lived on their same homelands for thousands of years, often walking the same paths their ancestors did. Their lifestyle and cultures are, of course, well adapted to the environment they inhabit.
Their daily lives tend to comprise of survival methods such as fishing, small scale agriculture, hunting, and gathering in the Amazon Rainforest, and growing, harvesting, and cattle herding in the high mountains. Yet due to the often remote locations of these rural communities, there are many items available in our lives that the people of the Amazon and Andes don’t yet have access to that could otherwise greatly improve their lives. Anything and everything will be a great help to these people who are so far away from civilization and/or do not have the means. |
MissionKuyapa’s non-profit mission is to provide outreach and support for some of the most overlooked regions in Peru.
Through offering educational, medical, and infrastructural support and sponsorships based on the specific needs of each local community or village, which we have considered first hand, we will deliver solutions that integrate well with the existing society to ensure the sustainability of all our efforts. By partnering with Delfin Amazon Cruises, which has deep connections to the people and culture of Amazonias, and Escudo, which works closely with the artisans of the Peruvian Andes, Kuyapa aims to utilize both organizations’ strengths in order to create a single channel for assistance, influence, and inspiration to these populations. |
ValuesHonesty– As a non-profit foundation, Kuyapa is devoted to the honest channeling of all our initiatives and funds. Also by sharing realistic expectations with all parties, we ensure that our work is always transparent and authentic.
Sustainability – Kuyapa believes that social work is useless if its benefits are not carried into the future. This is why our projects are always well thought out before implementation to be certain that positive results can be maintained, with consideration to the existing societal infrastructures, cultural norms, and nature’s own patterns. Intercultural exchange – By enlisting the help of locals who grew up in these regions and international experts in their field, Kuyapa is here to help foster intercultural exchanges as well as the sharing of ideas and experiences. Working alongside the native populations of the Andes and the Amazon, we are focused on multifaceted development. |
